2018 NHL Draft: Top 10 defensemen

Dahlin, Bouchard among best prospects at position

In the days leading to the 2018 NHL Draft at American Airlines Center in Dallas on June 22-23, NHL.com will break down the top prospects by position. Today: The top defensemen available.

Rasmus Dahlin of Frolunda in the Swedish Hockey League is not only the best defenseman of the 2018 NHL Draft, but the best player.

"Dahlin is an exceptionally talented prospect who will be able to contribute, influence and impact a team's fortunes much in the way that Erik Karlsson and Victor Hedman have in the NHL," said Dan Marr, Director of NHL Central Scouting. "If you wanted to pick one player from the 2018 draft who could potentially be viewed as a generational talent, Dahlin would be the only candidate."

Dahlin generating excitement for 2018 NHL Draft, Hedman says

Lightning defenseman can relate to hype surrounding likely No. 1 pick

Victor Hedman said the advent of social media has contributed to the excitement of Rasmus Dahlin likely becoming the first Sweden-born player chosen No. 1 in the NHL Draft since the Quebec Nordiques selected Mats Sundin in 1989.

The Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman has a good idea what Dahlin, 18 years old and No. 1 on NHL Central Scouting's final list of International skaters, is going through as the most discussed blue-chip prospect from overseas of the 2018 draft in Dallas.

1998 Redraft: Datsyuk would be No. 1 pick, Lecavalier second

Forward was selected in sixth round by Red Wings

NHL.com will take a look back at the NHL drafts from five, 10 and 20 years ago this week, leading to the 2018 NHL Draft at American Airlines Center in Dallas. How would a redo of those drafts look today?

Pavel Datsyuk had been passed over twice when the Detroit Red Wings selected him in the sixth round of the 1998 NHL Draft at Marine Midland Arena in Buffalo.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland long has been lauded for finding a superstar like Datsyuk so late in the draft. But as he always said, if he really was that smart he wouldn't have waited until the sixth round to select him.

Tavares could become one of most desirable free agents in NHL history

Former teammates praise skill, ambition of Islanders captain as decision nears

John Tavares and Matt Moulson have known each other since Tavares was in Grade 8 and played lacrosse with Moulson's brother.

They wound up as roommates when Tavares came to the NHL, living in Doug Weight's guest house. When it was time for dinner, they had a system; one would cook, the other washed dishes. Afterward, they played video games. They talked hockey and how to get better.

In 2012, Moulson asked Tavares to be the godfather of his first child, a daughter, Mila.

"I think you have maybe a handful of people in your life that you can call no matter what, and he's one of those people," Moulson said this month. "If anything were to be wrong or if you needed something super important and you call them, he's the type of guy that would put down everything and help you out. He's always there to talk if you need to talk about stuff. Just a real, loyal person and someone that I'll always have a friendship with no matter what's going on in our lives just because of how great a person he is."

Hoffman traded to Panthers by Sharks after being acquired from Senators

Forward sent to Florida for draft picks, came to San Jose for Boedker

Mike Hoffman was traded to the Florida Panthers by the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, about two hours after being acquired by the Sharks from the Ottawa Senators.

Hoffman went to the Panthers along with a seventh-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, with the Sharks receiving fourth- and fifth-round picks in 2018 and a second-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.

San Jose had acquired Hoffman from the Senators, along with defenseman prospect Cody Donaghey and a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, for forward Mikkel Boedker, defenseman prospect Julius Bergman and a sixth-round pick in 2020.

Hoffman, 28, had 56 points (22 goals, 34 assists) for the Senators this season. Selected by Ottawa in the fifth round (No. 130) of the 2009 NHL Draft, he has 230 points (107 goals, 123 assists) in 342 NHL games in seven seasons, all with the Senators.

Trotz, Capitals will know his worth soon enough

Contract impasse causes coach to resign after guiding Washington to first championship

Barry Trotz is about to find out his value. So are the Washington Capitals.

That was something they weren't able to agree on, so Trotz resigned as coach of the Capitals on Monday.

Trotz was under contract for two more seasons after winning the Stanley Cup with Washington this season triggered a two-year extension clause. But general manager Brian MacLellan said the Capitals accepted Trotz's resignation, leaving him free to coach elsewhere.

Other than the Capitals, the only NHL team without a coach is the New York Islanders.

Whether other teams rethink their coaching situation now that Trotz is available remains to be seen. It would be understandable if some do.

Boyle overcame cancer, son's health challenge with Devils

Center helped New Jersey return to playoffs, finalist for Masterton Trophy at NHL Awards

The worst part of Brian Boyle's season had nothing to do with him being diagnosed with leukemia in September.

A few weeks after revealing he had chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow but is treatable with oral medication, Boyle, the New Jersey Devils' 33-year-old center, and his wife, Lauren Bedford, were in Boston being warned by doctors that their 2-year-old son Declan might have Ewing sarcoma of the mandible, essentially a cancerous tumor in his jawbone.

"I couldn't put one foot in front of the other after that," Boyle said.

NHL salary cap expected to be near $80 million next season

Increase of about $5 million from this season

LAS VEGAS -- The NHL salary cap for the 2018-19 season is expected to be between $79.5 million and $80 million, Commissioner Gary Bettman said following the Board of Governors meeting Wednesday.

A final agreement with the NHL Players' Association is expected to come later Wednesday or Thursday.

The salary cap for the 2017-18 season was $75 million, up from $73 million in 2016-17.

Commissioner Bettman said the NHL is projecting the final escrow taken out of the players' contracts for the 2017-18 season to be 8 percent, which would be the lowest under the collective bargaining agreement that was implemented prior to the 2012-13 season.
